Во 2-й половине 1 тыс. до н.э. на территории Горного Алтая существовала пазырыкская культура, входившая в ареал скифо-сибирского культурного и исторического единства евразийских степей. Первые курганы с "замерзшими" могилами были открыты в 1865 г. В. В. Радловым. Тогда впервые была обнаружена сохранившаяся во льду одежда. Одна из наиболее замечательных находок — т. н. катандинский кафтан. Курганные группы объединяются в цепочки, которые вытянуты в меридианальном направлении, то есть с севера на юг, иногда с небольшими отклонениями по линии СВ-ЮЗ, что располагает их, как правило, поперек долины или наискось. Надо также отметить такую характерную для пазырыкских погребальных памятников черту, как нахождение их недалеко от современных поселений или зимовий. Здесь же имеются многочисленные петроглифы, и что интересно, это место было эпицентром алтайского землетрясения.

The Pazyryk culture is an Iron Age archaeological culture (ca. 6th to 3rd centuries BC) identified by excavated artifacts and mummified humans found in the Siberian permafrost in the Altay Mountains. The mummies are buried in long barrows (or "kurgans") similar to the tomb mounds of western Scythian culture in modern Ukraine. The type site are the Pazyryk burials of the Ukok Plateau. Many artifacts have been found at this location, including the Ice Princess, indicating a flourishing culture at this location that benefited from the many trade routes and caravans of merchants passing through the area. There are about half a million of petroglyphs known in Siberia and the Far East of Russia. Mobody knows up to now how many are still to be discovered. At any rate these documents of history deserve to be studied and added to the hoard of world culture. The rock art in Siberia is rather uniform in the two main areas of life - the forest region in the north and the wooded steppe in the south. A special role played always the Altai, the connection between the western and the eastern steppes. The forest region along the Amur seems to have been a conservative zone keeping its art through the millennia.
