The 10th field season of the Soviet-Mongolian historical and cultural expedition, led by Academician A. P. Okladnikov, has enriched archaeology with the discovery of 250 petroglyphs- rock paintings- in the valley of the Chu-luut River. Some 700 kilometers from Ulan-Bator, not far from the Khamar-Daban pass, there is a marvelous valley that stretches out at about 2, 000 meters above sea level. A deep gorge cuts through the valley, and along the bottom of the canyon at a depth of 60 to 80 meters winds the unruly Chuluut. The valley is uninhabited. ... A year ago a group of historians headed by V. Volkov, a senior research associate at the USSR Academy of Sciences' Archaeology Institute, studied three major petroglyph sites. The discovery of the ancient "stone Tretyakov Gallery" was completed in late autumn. Each day the members of the expedition had to clean the snow off the rocks in order to study and photograph the drawings. But the day came when the archaeologists knew for certain that they would have to leave or else they wouldn't be able to get across the pass. And not even a helicopter can fly down into the valley of the Chuluut. When all the gear and tents had been loaded into the truck, the sun came up and melted the snow. And then the scientists looked through their binoculars at the opposite shore of the Chuluut and saw amazingly clear geometric figures on the flat stone. Crossing the mountain river in a rubber boat, they made copies of the pictures. The petroglyphs dated from the end of the Stone and beginning of the Bronze Ages, the so-called Aeneolithic Age.
