The archeological complex Gnezdovo is one of the major sites of the viking era and of the early medieval russian state development period. Gnezdovo reached its zenith in the10th century, when it became the most significant commercial and handicraft centre on the trade route "from Varangians to the Greeks" which connected the North and the South of Europe. It was the specific axis of the then forming Early Medieval Russian State.
