Первыми о существовании тайного горного объекта на Южном Урале всему миру рассказали американцы. 16 апреля 1996 года «Нью-Йорк Таймс» опубликовала статью, в которой сообщила о загадочной военной базе, строящейся в России. «В ходе секретного проекта, напоминающего о жутких периодах «холодной войны», Россия занимается постройкой гигантского военного комплекса под землей в районе Уральских гор, как сообщают официальные лица на Западе и свидетели в России. К спрятанному внутри горы Ямантау в районе Белорецка (сегодня – город Межгорье – прим. Ред.) на Южном Урале огромному комплексу подходит железная дорога и автомагистраль. В работах задействованы тысячи рабочих», - писало издание.
