Truvor and Sineus were, according to the Primary Chronicle, the brothers of Rurik. The three brothers were asked by the Finnic and Slavic tribes in northern Russia to settle among them and to rule them. The two names are believed by some scholars to be a Slavic misunderstanding based on the Scandinavian expressions Trú vor and Sine hus. While Rurik settled in Novgorod, Sineous established himself at Bielo Ozero, on the shores of lake Bielo. Truvor established his realm in the vicinity of Smolensk. Truvor and Sineus died shortly after the establishment of their territories. Rurik then consolidated these lands into his own territory and thus laid the foundations for the Kingdom of Russia.
